Developing a Mattress

Here at The Sleep Lab we love developing sleep products that really help people sleep better.

Here at The Sleep Lab we love developing sleep products that really help people sleep better. We always start our journey with a sleep issue and then, whether the product is a mattress, pillows or a sleep tech product we look to help solve the issue. Unfortunately in the mattress industry people look to add quick marketing gimmicks to products, for example more springs or a new snazzy cover.

The reason we enjoy working with Adjustamatic is that they share this approach to product development. They have lots of experience in the health care industry and sell products as diverse as diabetic wound treatment to treatment products for horses. This gives them a long and illustrious history in developing healthcare products and they understand product development is about solving problems.

The journey to developing the AIR Mattress for Adjustamatic started with the issue of temperature fluctuations in the sleep environment. As a sleep practitioner this problem is one of the biggest James deals with; so many people suffer from being too hot, too cold or both during the night.  What we knew is that people love the pressure relieving properties of memory Foam but didn’t like the heat it generated. Other solutions that had come to the market such as Gel topped mattresses didn’t really solve the problem. Gel feels cool as you go to bed, but it absorbs the heat from your body and stores it in the mattress making the sleeper warm.

We knew springs were great for airflow but not as good for support and knew that foam topped products like Gel or memory didn’t allow heat dispersion. What we did was take a pocket spring core, and then worked on a topper that was both pressure relieving and cool. Working in conjunction with Adjustamatic and their supplier Vitafoam we came up with the proprietary technology of AIRFOAM. It basically has channels running through the foam, both horizontally and vertically to create plenty of airflow through the mattress. It also supports better than memory foam. We had been successful! A mattress that breathes and also supports!
